UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday (20 / 7) ask for help all donor countries to address the current famine in Somalia and prevent worsening of the crisis.
"If funds are not available now, the crisis seems to continue and spread to other countries," Ban said.
The UN on Wednesday (20 / 7), declared a state of emergency in two regions of famine in southern Somalia: the southern Bakool and Lower Shabelle.
Across Somalia, nearly half of the population, or 3.7 million people, is now facing a crisis. Among them, as many as 2.8 million people are in the south of the country.
United Nations, has delivered high alert for months, Ban said as reported by Xinhua - which monitored ANTARA here on Thursday.
According to UN leaders, the entire requirement amounted to 1.6 billion dollars for Somalia, and as many as 300 million U.S. dollars needed in the next two months "in order to perform the reaction is appropriate for areas hit by famine."
"Children and adults died in a staggering amount, every day of delay will take away more lives," he said.
UN Secretary-General also noted the long term, "we need to try to prevent such famine and other emergency conditions".
U.S. Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice on Wednesday morning, said the United States "has been and remains the largest donor of bilateral humanitarian aid for Horn of Africa", by donating 459 million dollars this year, including an additional 28 million dollars announced by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Wednesday.
