Cameron's 'regret' over Hillsborough

Cameron's 'regret' over Hillsborough: PM all but apologises for Thatcher government blunders

David Cameron yesterday came close to apologising for mistakes made by Margaret Thatcher's government over its handling of the Hillsborough disaster.

The Prime Minister admitted there were 'regrets' for all institutions involved – including government.

His comments are the closest the Government has come to issuing a full-scale apology to bereaved families who are campaigning for justice.

During Prime Minister's Questions, Mr Cameron repeated his pledge to release official documents about the football stadium crush 22 years ago in which 96 fans died. The Mail has recently highlighted the Hillsborough families' long campaign for all official papers to be disclosed.
In particular they want to learn about briefings South Yorkshire Police gave then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher on a visit to the Sheffield Wednesday stadium the following day. Labour's Steve Rotheram, who led Monday's Commons debate on the release of Government papers, urged Mr Cameron to admit mistakes were made at the highest level
